My 10 Never-Skip Songs

My college roommate and I using spatulas as microphones, naturally.

We all know how it goes – you get in your car to drive to work/school/the store, and you immediately plug in your phone/iPod/mixtape and you throw it on shuffle. Then you inevitably skip the next 50 songs that come up, and you wonder why you even have them on your device in the first place. You question everything about your life, and tell yourself that there’s no reason that you ever should have downloaded “Girl on TV” by LFO, even though you’re sure it changed your life in the 5th grade.
But then there are those few glorious songs that you never skip, no matter how many times you’ve heard them. The ones that you shamelessly rock out to in your car, and maybe sometimes listen to on repeat. Sure, some of them might be guilty pleasure songs, but they’re your absolute favorites, and you’d never be so cruel as to skip over them.
I definitely have more than 10 of these never-skip songs, but I tried to narrow it down to the first 10 that came to mind. No judgment on my song choices, all right? And please, share your never-skip songs with me below!
1. “Anna Begins” The Counting Crows

What it reminds me of: Late summer of 2009, starting my new job, and being introduced to the man who would eventually become my husband.
Best line: “Her kindness bangs a gong – it’s moving me along, and Anna begins to fade away.”
2. “First Day of My Life” Bright Eyes
What it reminds me of: What it feels like to fall in love, wholly and completely.
Best line: “Yours is the first face that I saw. I think I was blind before I met you.”
3. “Fix You” Coldplay
What it reminds me of: My freshman year of college, and all the changes that came with it.
Best line: “When you love someone but it goes to waste, could it be worse?”
4. “Float On” Modest Mouse
What it reminds me of: That no matter how bad things may seem, life just keeps on going, and eventually, things will be good again
Best line: “We both got fired on exactly the same day. Well we’ll float on good news is on the way.”
5. “Holiday in Spain” The Counting Crows
What it reminds me of: That ever-present piece of me that wants to see every square inch of the earth, and the thought that everywhere I want to go is simply a plane ride away.
Best line: “Well Happy New Year’s baby, we could probably fix it if we clean it up all day, or we could simply pack our bags, and catch a plane to Barcelona ‘cause this city’s a drag.”
6. “January Rain” David Gray
What it reminds me of: Rainy January days that I love so much, and my first dance with TJ at our wedding.
Best line: Instrumental
7. “Landlocked Blues” Bright Eyes
What it reminds me of: November 2009, when I was so unsure of where my life would take me, and completely unaware that it was just two months away from changing forever.
Best line: “And the world’s got me dizzy again. You’d think after 22 years I’d be used to the spin.”
8. “Mardy Bum” Arctic Monkeys
What it reminds me of: Silly little arguments that happen in relationships, and how funny they seem thinking back on them.
Best line: “So laugh and joke around, remember cuddles in the kitchen, yeah, to get things off the ground.”
9. “Simple Song” The Shins
What it reminds me of: The last few months of wedding planning and being engaged, before taking the leap into married life.
Best line: “Love’s such a delicate thing that we do, with nothing to prove.”

10. “Step” Vampire Weekend
What it reminds me of: My commute home from work, where I take the time to unwind by singing at the top of my lungs in my car.
Best line: “Wisdom’s a gift, but you’d trade it for youth. Age is an honor, it’s still not the truth.”

Ahh, Sometime Around Midnight totally should have been on my list – SUCH a good one that I never get tired of listening to. I haven’t heard any of the other ones on your list (insert embarrassed face here), so I’m off to give them a listen.
